Press Release:
HOMECOMING SCOTTISH CUP IS GUEST OF HONOUR AT GRETNA WEDDING
A couple will make their wedding vows in front of the Homemaking Scottish Cup today, Friday 22 May, as it reaches Gretna Green – the final destination on its whistle-stop tour of Scotland ahead of the cup final on 30 May at Hampden.
The bride and groom, David Ridgway and Michelle Wright from Oxfordshire, will be travelling 275 miles to cross the border and tie the knot in front of their family and friends, and the world’s oldest national footballing trophy. The Scottish Cup, which has been touring well-known Scottish venues to publicise the final at Hampden.
Groom David Ridgway, who is based at RAF Brize Norton said:
“I only have a few loves in my life, one of which is the soon to be Mrs Ridgway and another is football so the fact I can celebrate them both on my wedding day really is the icing on the cake!
The young couple will include their special guest in the happiest day of their lives by allowing it to witness their intimate ceremony and by posing for pictures with the oldest national footballing trophy in the world, that will then be included in their most precious photo album.
Rhona Lynn, Manager at the Gretna Wedding Bureau commented:
“We have seen a lot of interesting sights at Gretna Green on a couple’s special day but we have never had the Scottish Cup attend a wedding before. The day will be that little bit more memorable for Brian, Michelle and their guests which is great.”
The cup has been taken from John O’Groats to Gretna Green throughout the week to celebrate Scotland’s culture and heritage in the year of the Homecoming and give fans the opportunity to see the historic cup which was originally minted in 1885.
